Ticks are responsible for more than 75% of the vector-borne illnesses reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) every year. Since the 1990s, scientists have reported a nearly 300 percent increase in U.S. counties classified as “high incidence” for Lyme disease, and Lyme has been reported in all 50 US states (as well as every country in the world, except Antarctica). In January, the CDC estimated that over 476,000 Americans were diagnosed with Lyme disease annually between 2010 and 2018 — about 10 times higher than what’s currently reported. Lyme disease is a global pandemic but NOT a global priority. Please, join us as we continue to #FightLyme.
Tomorrow, monuments around the world will light up to bring awareness to #WorldNTDDay, including the CN Tower in Toronto! Did you know that neglected tropical diseases still affect 1 in every 5 people around the world? We must get the world’s attention and join together to #beatNTDs. Bettersocks was created by the Bertoia Family, in honor of their son, Daniel, in collaboration with the SickKids Foundation. The socks feature hand-drawn artwork from children at SickKidsToronto, and raise money for better cancer research and a brighter future. After receiving the child’s artwork, the Bettersocks in-house designers digitally reproduce their drawings, preparing each month’s design to be seamlessly stitched into the socks.
Get your own pair at Bettersocks.com today, just in time for the holidays! With each purchase, you will also receive the artist’s story of bravery, selflessness and an unrelenting commitment to finding a cure. Thank you to the Bertoia family & all the SickKids Foundation for this incredible gift. And thank you in advance for your purchase, which brings Bettersocks one step closer to their goal of raising $1million for SickKids Foundation to advance scientific research and improve the health of children.

Here’s what to do:
The biennial Reaching The Last Mile (RLM) Forum, held in Abu Dhabi, convenes global health leaders to share insights and best practices on how to map out, eliminate & eradicate infectious diseases. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this year’s RLM Global Health Summit brought together more than 300 preeminent individuals from government, private sector, philanthropy & academia, to discuss reaching the last mile of disease elimination faster – including The Avril Lavigne Foundation. We were honored to participate alongside incredible organizations like The Clinton Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Project Hope, the WHO and more, and of course we brought along our partners from Global Lyme Alliance who joined us to educate the global health community about Lyme and other tick-borne/vector-borne diseases. During the Forum, we had the opportunity to hear from a number of prominent global health leaders, exhibit at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and participate in a Round Table focused on Climate Change and Global Health (chaired by the esteemed Dr. Anthony Costello.) Participants included the UAE’s Ministers of Climate Change and Health, Rt. Hon Helen Clark (former Prime Minister of New Zealand), Malaria No More, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and others. During the Forum, Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg and other philanthropic leaders from around the world pledged over $2.6 BILLION to eradicate Polio. The Forum was collaborative, educational and beyond inspiring. We are grateful to have been included in this prestigious event & thank our generous hosts, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed and the Crown Prince Court. More Photos
